What custom web development means in practice
Hand-built, not plugin-stacked
Most small business sites run on WordPress with a dozen plugins doing jobs a template was never designed for — a slider plugin, a forms plugin, an SEO plugin, a caching plugin, each with its own update schedule and its own way of breaking. We write in server-side languages such as PHP & Python, and hand-craft properly structured, standards-based HTML, CSS & JavaScript instead. Every line exists because the site needs it, which is the real alternative to plugin-heavy WordPress that owners ask us for: fewer moving parts, fewer things to patch, and a codebase one developer can actually hold in their head.
Security from the first line
New builds are checked against the OWASP Top Ten as they're written: parameterised queries, output escaping, and a content security policy set to actually restrict what can run rather than report on it — see MDN's CSP reference. Contact and enquiry forms carry anti-bot tokens and rate limiting, and when a message genuinely fails to send, the form says so — it never shows a success page over a silent failure.
Fast because nothing unnecessary loads
No third-party trackers, fonts or scripts are pulled in from someone else's server — everything the browser needs is served from ours, which removes a whole class of slow, flaky requests before performance work even starts. Images are served as AVIF or WebP, sized for the screen that's asking for them, rather than one large file scaled down by the browser. Every page of our own site currently scores 100 for accessibility, best practices and SEO in Google Lighthouse, and 98–100 for performance on a simulated mid-range phone — anyone can check that, or any other site, for free at pagespeed.web.dev. Speed matters most on the landing pages behind a PPC management campaign, where a slow page wastes the click.
Web applications as well as websites
Web application development applies the same craft to tools people use every day. We build interactive applications that run in any modern browser, install on a phone or desktop like a native app and keep working without a connection, using the progressive web app standards.
For The Infinite Bass we built a set of free practice tools this way, including the Infinite Fretboard, an interactive map of scales across the bass neck, and an interval ear trainer for learning to hear the distance between notes. They load quickly, need no app store, and share one engine, so each new tool builds on the last.
A word on WordPress
WordPress runs about 40% of all websites, and for good reason: it’s free, familiar and quick to set up. We still don’t build with it, and the reason is maintenance. A typical WordPress site depends on a stack of third-party plugins, each written by someone else and updated on its own schedule. In Patchstack’s 2025 WordPress security report, 96% of the vulnerabilities found were in plugins and 4% in themes.
A hand-built site has no plugins to patch, no admin login for bots to hammer, and nothing running that the site doesn’t need. That makes it faster, simpler to secure and cheaper to keep healthy for years. If you already run WordPress, we can move you off it, with redirects in place so your content and existing links carry across.
Backed up, tested and handed over
We take a backup before every change goes live and pair that with the hosting plan that keeps it running once it's launched. Handover includes the code, the reasoning behind the structural decisions, and a plain account of what would need attention next — nothing left as a black box only we understand.
